History of chassis 133

At the end of the 1986 season, John Fitzpatrick sold all his team’s racing equipment to Jochen Dauer of Nuremberg.

Jochen Dauer Racing was established for the 1987 season, during which, the team ran the ex-Fitzpatrick Porsche 962 (chassis 112) with sponsorship from the computer division of Victor Technologies.

For the 1988 season, Jochen Dauer ordered a brand new 962 from Porsche (chassis 133) and commissioned two un-numbered 962 tubs from John Thompson’s TC Prototypes in England.

One of these Thompson chassis was assembled into a new car and the other was sold to Fritz Gebhardt.

For carnet reasons, the Thompson chassis retained by Dauer was initially numbered 133 to match the team’s forthcoming factory built car.

When Dauer’s factory built 962 was ready, the ex-Fitzpatrick chassis (112) which thus far in 1988 had acted as the team’s spare, was sold Heinz-Jorgen Dahmen. As part of the deal, Dahmen re-numbered 112 (to 009/88D) while Jochen Dauer retained the 112 ID plate and attached it to his Thompson chassis which had previously appeared as 133.

Only Dauer’s factory built 133 used the latest Bosch MP 1.7 engine management while the Thompson example ran the older MP 1.2 system.

The ‘actual’ chassis 133 made its competition debut at the Norisring Supercup race in June 1988. Later in the season, Jochen Dauer drove it to victory at Zeltweg en route to winning the 1988 Interserie championship.

Outside of Supercup and Interserie events, chassis 133 also appeared in the World Sportscar Championship race at the Nurburgring (DNF) and the end-of-season Kyalami 500km (where it finished third).

For 1989, Dauer’s sponsorship agreement with Victor Computing came to an end. The Thompson chassis, which had variously appeared as 133 and 112, was sold (to French collector Jean Verchere). Chassis 133 was retained and Dauer added a new car mid-season (chassis 141).

Chassis 133’s best result in 1989 came at the Norisring Supercup race where John Andretti drove it to second place. Jochen Dauer also took a brace of thirds at the Hungaroring (Interserie) and Nurburgring (Supercup).

Chassis 133’s final competitive appearance came at the Donington 480km World Sportscar Championship race in September 1989.

The tight Donington pitlane forced teams to park their cars tail in. During the closing minutes of qualifying, Will Hoy entered the pitlane and swung to the right to allow Dauer’s mechanics to pull the car back into position. However, the Porsche was struck in the right side by Alain Ferte’s Jaguar XJR-11 as the Frenchman accelerated out on his last set of qualifying tyres.

Dauer’s team manager was knocked over in the accident but escaped with bruising.

Unfortunately, chassis 133’s bodywork and turbo/exhaust arrangement was badly damaged and the team were unable to repair it on the spot.

Afterwards, chassis 133 was returned to Dauer’s Nuremberg workshop where it later became the prototype for a series of 962-based road cars: the Dauer 962 LM.

Comprehensively uprated and repainted yellow with a matching leather interior, the newly configured 962 was unveiled on Dauer’s stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1993.

It was purchased by the Sultan of Brunei who went on to order another four examples (one green, one silver, one black and one red).

Once landed in Brunei, chassis 133 was registered BQ 126.

In 1997, the car was returned to Dauer where it was re-upholstered with a red interior. At the same time, Dauer fitted a semi-automatic gearbox, tinted glass and black centred wheels.

Today, chassis 133 remains in Brunei along with the rest of the Sultan’s fleet of Dauer 962 LMs.
