In addition to the outrageous V8-powered Hammer, AMG also offered a slightly toned down version of the timeless Mercedes-Benz W124 E-class using the company’s renowned straight six.

At its heart was an enlarged version of the legendary M104 engine taken out from 3 to 3.4-litres. Also equipped with hotter camshafts and an uprated crankshaft, the trick AMG motor pumped out 270bhp compared to 217bhp in standard tune.

Also included as part of the package was AMG’s iconic W124 body kit which comprised custom front and bumper assemblies, deep side skirts and a rear spoiler, This was of course fully colour coded (along with the grille. To cover the bigger split rim OZ Racing alloys, all four fenders were subtly flared. Inside, customers got special AMG instrumentation, an AMG steering wheel and an AMG gear knob.

Thought to be one of just 50 total examples completed to AMG 3.4 specification, this Mercedes-Benz 300 CE was delivered new to Japan in September 1991 and duly converted by AMG Japan.

Under the bonnet, the venerable M104 inline-six was over-bored to 3.4-litres and the crank upgraded to increase stroke, while bespoke AMG camshafts improved top-end performance, unlocking an extra 40 brake horsepower and bringing the total output to 270.

The body was also adorned with the full “widebody” kit, featuring flared wheel arches, three-piece deep-dish AMG split-rim wheels by OZ Racing, rear spoiler, and deep front air dam. The interior benefits from upgraded heated and electronically adjustable Recaro seats, factory-fitted “Tempomatic” air conditioning, AMG steering wheel, gear knob, and AMG instrument cluster. The car was further specified with heat-insulating windows, an electric sunroof, and cruise control.

The car remained in its adopted home of Japan for some time, before being exported to the United Arab Emirates.

The car’s odometer displays 153,937 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, and importantly the 300 CE retains its matching-numbers 3.4-litre AMG powerplant.

Accompanied by its owner’s manuals and finished in its factory-correct colours of Blue-Black Metallic over a Black leather interior, this is the ultimate incarnation of the six-cylinder W124.
