One to Buy: 80,000km 1994 Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG

Having already collaborated on a small series of existing models, the first Mercedes-Benz conceived at the pre-production stage with AMG emerged at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1993.

Dubbed C 36 AMG, the new car was based on Mercedes’ W202 C-class which had recently replaced the enormously successful W201 190. As expected, the highly anticipated AMG version came with an engine, gearbox, suspension and brake system that had all been significantly enhanced.

The assembly process saw partially completed examples of the C 280 Sport trucked from Mercedes’ Bremen plant to the AMG facility 600km south in Affalterbach where cars were stripped of their surplus-to-requirement equipment and brought up to C 36 trim.

In total, a little over 5000 copies were constructed between September 1993 and June 1997, at which point the straight six-powered C 36 made way for the V8-engined C 43.

As you would expect, most examples of the C 36 were pressed into daily driver duty and, in line with Mercedes’ legendary reliability, racked up an intergalactic mileage during the years that followed.

However, currently on offer at the Springbok Sportwagen showroom in Isernhagen is a superb low mileage example in a handsome colour scheme.

Ordered in Blue-Black Metallic, this C 36 Sedan was optioned with an array of extras to include full Black leather upholstery, electric heated front seats, an electric sunroof, air-conditioning, driver and passenger airbags, cruise control, remote central locking, a high end audio system, heat-insulating glass and an outside temperature gauge.

First delivered to a customer from Hamburg in June 1994, the car later spent time in Japan prior to heading back to Germany a few years later. It has covered a little under 81,000km, a figure backed up by a fully documented service history to include the original book back.
