One to Buy: 1 of 1 in British Racing Green 1989 Aston Martin V8 Volante Zagato

Because demand for the V8 Vantage Zagato exceeded the limited run of 50 cars promised by Aston Martin, the British firm was left with a dilemma about how best to satisfy those customers who had been unable to get their hands on one.

Ultimately, a decision was made to build 25 open top Volante iterations, but with the standard as opposed to Vantage engine so that buyers of the original Zagato-bodied cars could sleep easy knowing they had acquired the highest performance version. A few styling tweaks were also made to differentiate the two models with the Volante most notably receiving retractable as opposed to covered headlights.

By the time production of the V8 Volante Zagato came to an end, a total of 37 had actually been completed. Of these, a good number were converted to the more handsome Coupe-style front end with covered headlights, work typically done post production by either Aston Works Service or its agent, RS Williams.

Just such a machine was chassis 30018 which is currently on offer at the Thiesen Automoble showroom in Berlin.

Uniquely, chassis 30018 was the only V8 Volante Zagato configured in British Racing Green. One of just 13 cars built in left-hand drive, it was also configured with Magnolia leather upholstery and the desirable manual gearbox.

Delivered new in 1989 to a Parisian owner via Stuttgart-based German Aston Martin agent, Merz & Pabst, the switch to Coupe-style covered headlights was executed by RS Williams from its base in Surrey. Having spent its early years in France, chassis 30018 departed for Germany in 2005 where it has resided ever since. Today, this one-of-one Aston Martin has covered 14,000km, comes with a fully documented service / ownership history and looks to be in immaculate order throughout.
