History of chassis 0848
Chassis 0848 was the last of three 330 P3s constructed by Ferrari for the 1966 racing season. Like the first example (0844), chassis 0848 emerged from Maranello with Coupe bodywork while the other P3 (chassis 0846) was configured as a Spyder.
The trio of P3s were reserved for use by Scuderia Ferrari in 1966. That year, six World Sportscar Championship events were contested by the Italian team: Daytona, Sebring, Monza, Spa, the Nurburgring and Le Mans.
0848 appeared at only one of these races, the championship finale at Le Mans, where it ran alongside the brace of existing P3s.
The brand new car was allocated to Ferrari’s number one driver pairing, the British contingent of John Surtees and Mike Parkes, however, Surtees walked out during practice following a disagreement with team manager, Eugenio Dragoni. Surtees’ spot was taken by reserve driver, Ludovico Scarfiotti.
With qualifying dominated by the plethora of seven-litre Mk2 Ford GT40s in attendance, Parkes and Scarfiotti lined up seventh on the grid, but by lap two of the race Parkes had moved 0848 into fourth position. By the four hour mark though, some of the slow-starting Fords had made up ground and 0848 was down to eighth.
Things went really sour for the Ferrari runners overnight when 0844 and 0846 started to overheat. Meanwhile, chassis 0848 was involved in a nasty crash at 12:30am when Scarfiotti smashed into the back of Jo Schlesser’s near stationary Matra. Schlesser had been reversing back onto the track at Tertre Rouge having been forced to avoid an accident involving Georges Heligoin’s CD SP66. Chassis 0848’s front end was severely pummelled as a consequence of the crash and Scarfiotti was taken to hospital with minor bruising.
By mid-distance, all the P3s and 365 P2/3’s had dropped out and Ford famously went on to sweep the podium thus ending Ferrari’s winning streak at Le Mans.
Chassis 0848 subsequently returned to Maranello. Over the winter of 1966-1967, it was repaired and converted to 412 P specification. The 412 P model was created for Ferrari’s distributor teams to race during 1967 while the works outfit upgraded to the further enhanced 330 P4.
Ferrari sold chassis 0848 to the firm’s Swiss distributor, Georges Filipinetti in Geneva.
The car appeared in Filipinetti’s red and white colours during 1967 and contested five World Championship events. Herbert Muller was partnered by on-loan Scuderia Ferrari driver, Nino Vaccarella, for the car’s 412 P debut at the 1967 Monza 1000km where 0848 bagged fourth overall behind a brace of P4s and a works Porsche 910.
Jean Guichet then co-drove with Muller at the Targa Florio and Le Mans 24 Hours, but the car failed to finish on either occasion (owing to differential and engine failure respectively). Another retirement followed at the Mugello GP road race when Mario Casoni raced the 412 P with Muller.
The final two period outings for chassis 0848 came at a pair of hillclimbs in August of 1967. First, French gentleman driver and collector, Pierre Bardinon, placed sixth overall at the Mont Dore Hillclimb. Afterwards, Herbert Muller finished fifth overall and won the over two-litre Prototype class at the Ollon Villars Hillclimb (a round of the 1967 World Sportscar Championship).
Georges Filipinetti then sold chassis 0848 to Pierre Bardinon with whom it remained until 1990. At this point, the car departed for Giorgio Perfetti in Switzerland.
