VIN: Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato chassis 20019
History of chassis 20019
Compared with the sustained upswing in high end collector car values seen since 2012, the late 1980s boom came and went in a flash.
At the very top of the market between late 1989 and early 1990, some cars had risen in value by 500%.
A breathless injection of Japanese money arrived late on and then disappeared practically overnight.
Although retained by the first owner until 2010 and never actually sold, this Zagato-bodied Aston Martin V8 Vantage (chassis 20019) is a perfect illustration of just how crazy things got in a very short space of time.
One of 50 production variants built, it was painted Gladiator Red with a black leather interior, right-hand drive and manual transmission.
Chassis 20019 was delivered new to HWM in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, who were the oldest established Aston Martin main dealer in the world.
Registered D923 DPA to HWM on 19th January 1987, 20019 acted as the firm’s demonstrator until being purchased by the first owner later that year when it had covered 700 miles.
First photographed here at HWM in the summer of 1989, at this stage chassis 20019 had little over a thousand miles on the clock. The price was £550,000.
Next photographed in early in 1993, the little-used car now had an asking price of £120,000.
This was still well above the initial £87,000 charged by Aston Martin and double what these cars would eventually come down to.
