History of chassis 026

Chassis 026 was a Dino 206 S Spyder sold to Ferrari’s Swiss distributor, Scuderia Filipinetti.

Although constructed in 1966, 026 did not make its competition debut until the 1967 season. It joined the rest of Filipinetti’s Geneva-based stable that, for the ‘67 campaign, also included a Ferrari 412 P, a Ferrari 275 GTB/C and a number of Ford GT40s.

026 first appeared for round two of the 1967 World Sportscar Championship: the Sebring 12 Hours on April 1st. Herbert Muller and Gunther Klass were behind the wheel and qualified 15th.

When the flag dropped at 11am, the drivers dashed across the track to their cars and Klass got the best start to lead the field away.

By the end of the first hour, Klass was fourth in the two-litre Group 4 class behind a trio of Porsche 906 Carreras with one of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33s close behind. Unfortunately, 026 was retired around quarter distance with suspension trouble.

Scuderia Filipinetti’s next outing with 026 came at the Nurburgring 1000km eight weeks later (May 28th). On this occasion, Muller was joined by Jean Guichet.

It was Guichet that ventured out first in 026 during practice, but the car was to soon meet a fiery end, much like had happened to one of Filipinetti’s GT40s at the Monza 1000km in late April.

Before Guichet had set a proper time, a carburettor fire engulfed 026’s engine bay. Guichet stopped in the Esses after the North Turn, but with no fire marshals close by, the whole car went up in flames.

The first fire crew arrived 35 minutes later having eventually set off from the pit lane. By this time, 026 had incurred extensive damage.

The remains subsequently passed to noted Ferrari collector, Pierre Bardinon in France.
