One to Buy: ex-Jay Kay 1985 Audi Quattro Sport
/ Ben Tyer
Unlike Lancia and Peugeot who elected to create purpose-built Group B specials from scratch, Audi was determined to prove a tweaked version of its Quattro could cut the mustard against the new breed of special stage supercar.
To give the Quattro every chance, Audi cut 320mm from the wheelbase and fitted bigger front brakes along with wider wheels.
In the engine bay was an aluminium-alloy as opposed to steel block version of the inline five cylinder engine with two instead of four valves per cylinder. The cylinder bores were fractionally reduced in size to ensure the engine came in under Group B’s three-litre swept volume limit.
Audi also installed a new KKK K27 turbo and air-to-air intercooler. The net result was a more than 50% hike in horsepower and significant torque gain.
Cosmetically the new Quattro Sport got a distinctive new look with a redesigned nose, flared arches and a more steeply raked windscreen. Aside from the steel doors, body panels were a mix of carbon-Kevlar and fibreglass.
Inside, the cockpit was kitted out with a host of new high end parts.
This Quattro Sport was delivered new to Switzerland in January 1985. Configured in Alpine white and equipped with the optional electric windows, passenger-side exterior mirror and plug-in harness belts, the car made its way to Britain during the late 1990s and in 2014 joined the collection of Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay, with whom it has resided ever since.
Offered complete with its book pack and a comprehensive service history, this superb Quattro Sport is currently showing 62,700km.
