One to Buy: Non-sunroof 70,000 mile Lago Blue 1987 Audi Quattro UR
/ Ben Tyer
Few cars have had such a transformative effect on their maker’s fortunes as the Audi Quattro.
Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1980, the Quattro rapidly changed Audi’s image from builder of good quality but rather pedestrian workhorses to internationally renowned prestige manufacturer that could rival BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
As the first truly high performance road car offered in four-wheel drive trim, the Quattro occupied a unique position in the market. Moreover, with its handsome styling accentuated by brawny fender flares, during the Quattro’s life it was arguably the best looking four-seat Coupe on the market.
Throw in a sprinkling of title-winning success in the World Rally Championship and Audi’s reputation for outstanding build quality and it’s clear why the Quattro became a 1980s automotive icon.
Because the Quattro was so well suited to everyday use in even the most inhospitable of climates, many have accumulated intergalactic mileage and been flogged to within an inch of their lives.
However, currently on offer at the 4 Star Classics showroom in Guildford, Surrey, is a remarkable first generation UR Quattro in a rarely seen specification.
Supplied new in September 1987 as one of the last UR Quattros (the updated MB version was unveiled that same month), this particular machine was configured in stunning Lago Blue Metallic with Graphite Eton fabric upholstery.
If this amazing combination was not enough, the first owner elected not to have a sunroof installed which makes this car lighter, stiffer, less prone to rust, incredibly scare and massively more desirable than a sunroof-equipped example.
The Quattro was initially registered to NJM Guildford Ltd. (Office Supplies) and subsequently transferred to owner of the business, N.J. Montague who retained it for another ten years.
Today, this superb example of the first generation Quattro theme is offered with a little over 70,000 miles on the odometer complete with the original VAG book pack and MOT certificates dating back to its first test in 1990.
