One to Buy: Volcano Black 1994 Audi B4 RS2 Avant
Although the 227bhp B4-based S2 launched in 1991 was an extremely accomplished machine, it was soon overshadowed by the first in a series of super high performance RS-badged Audis.
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1994, the RS2 was a collaboration between Audi and Porsche that yielded one of the most extraordinary and unconventional supercars of the 1990s.
Each RS2 started life as a specially prepared Avant bodyshell that was shipped from Ingolstadt to Porsche’s Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen. Here, cars were equipped with a more potent 315bhp engine, an uprated six-speed gearbox plus much-improved brakes. Porsche wheels were also installed along with stiffer suspension.
Cosmetically, the RS2 came with an array of subtle exterior and interior features. However, to most observers it looked pretty much like any other Audi station wagon.
With a 166mph top speed and 4.8 second 0-62mph time, the RS2 was a match for practically any supercar of the era. Famously, from 0-30mph it was the fastest accelerating road car in the world; at 1.5 seconds not even a McLaren F1 could beat it.
