One to Buy: 1300 mile Samoa Orange Metallic 2014 Audi Type 42 R8 5.2 V10
/ Ben Tyer
A little over two years after the Type 42 R8 had been launched in V8 trim, December 2008 saw Audi release a V10 version.
With its extra pair of cylinders, the V10 motor displaced 5204cc compared to 4163cc for the V8, but was otherwise unchanged. Peak output went from 420bhp at 7800rpm and 317lb-ft at 4500-6000rpm to 525bhp at 8000rpm and 391lb-ft at 6500rpm.
Other equipment fitted to the V10-powered R8 included new-LED headlights, V10 badges on the front fenders, a simplified front grille, twin blade intakes front and rear, a satin black tail fascia and single exhaust outlets per side. 19-inch wheels replaced the original 18-inch diameter rims. The fronts still measured 8.5-inches wide, but the rears were increased from 10.5-inches to 11-inches.
Elsewhere, a 90-litre fuel tank was fitted instead of the V8’s 75-litre unit and a Bang & Olufsen 465 watt audio system came as standard.
Having thus far been offered exclusively in Coupe trim, Audi went on to unveil a V10-engined R8 Spyder at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. Aside from a new electric canvas roof that folded away under a flattened retractable rear deck, the R8 Spyder featured a pair of roll over safety bars behind the seats. In addition, the Coupe’s trademark sideblades were deleted and the fuel filler cap was moved from the right-hand sail panel to the top of the right-hand rear fender. Owing to reduced space, an 80-litre fuel tank was installed instead of the V10 Coupe’s 90-litre cell.
From March 2011, the R8 Spyder was available with the 4.2-litre V8 engine.
Unlike most R8s which left the factory in grey, silver or black, this V10 Spyder, which is heading to auction at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale scheduled for August 13th to 15th, was ordered in a rarely seen colour combination: Samoa Orange Metallic with Black upholstery.
In addition to its rarely seen livery, chassis ‘001196’ was configured with Madras Orange contrast stitching, the Black optic package, Carbon Sigma cockpit inlays, iPod integration and illuminated aluminium door sills.
Delivered to Crown Audi in Clearwater, Florida, on October 29th 2013, chassis WUASNAFG0EN001196 was subsequently registered to its first owner on November 12th. The 2014 model year car passed to its second owner in May 2022, at which point the odometer was showing a little under 1100 miles. Since then, the R8’s second custodian has added less than a couple of hundred miles.
At the time of cataloguing, this V10-engined R8 Spyder which has resided in Florida since new, was showing just over 1300 miles. Its last documented maintenance was carried out in November 2024 when a 75,000 mile service was performed.
