One to Buy: 1 of 3 in Nocciola Metallizzato 1968 Ferrari Dino 206 GT
/ Ben Tyer
The Dino road car project, brought about by Ferrari’s need to run an F2 engine of which at least 500 copies had been built, spawned a trio of V6-powered models.
As Ferrari’s manufacturing partner in the deal (there was not the manufacturing capacity required in Maranello), Fiat came up with two front-engined models: the two-seat Pininfarina-styled Dino 2000 Spider and the 2+2 Bertone-designed Dino 2000 Coupe.
Separate to these was the Ferrari-marketed Dino 206 GT, an an exciting mid-engined two-seat Coupe with an extraordinarily pretty aluminium body and identical all-alloy twin cam V6 engine to its Fiat-badged brethren.
Just 152 copies of the Dino 206 GT were completed between 1968 and ‘69 as it was quickly replaced by a 2.4-litre version that utilised a weightier iron block motor and steel for the non-opening exterior body panels.
As a consequence, the Dino GT gained 35bhp in its transition to 2.4-litre trim, but this was offset by an additional 180kg to lug around.
Presented here is the 38th of those 152 cars built, chassis 00176, which is currently on offer at the Canepa showroom in Scotts Valley, California.
One of just three Dino 206 GTs painted Nocciola Metallizzato, 00176 was also configured with optional black vinyl seats and red leather inserts. Completed on October 1st 1968, the car was delivered via Motor S.a.s. di Carla Allegreti e C. in Rome to the local Mrs Silvia Fosani.
Between 2016 and ‘17, a complete restoration of the matching numbers Dino was undertaken back to its factory-delivered specification. Having undergone a meticulous Canepa preparation, 00176 is described as “ready to drive 200 miles to a concours event”.
