One to Buy: Blu Scuro 1969 Maserati Ghibli Spyder

Thanks to radical new concealed headlights, the avant-garde Maserati Ghibli cut a real dash compared to its original two-seat GT rival: the more classically-styled Ferrari 275 GTB/4.

Deliveries began soon after the production-ready Ghibli Coupe made its Geneva Salon debut in March 1967. The new car featured a steel monocoque construction with double wishbone front suspension, a live axle at the rear, discs brakes all round and a dry-sumped 4.7-litre all-alloy DOHC V8 with 310bhp.

In November 1968, Maserati added an open-top Spyder to the Ghibli range. However, barely 10% of Ghibli buyers opted for the convertible version which seems inextricable today.

Of all the 125 Ghibli Spyders built in both first generation 4.7-litre and subsequent 4.9-litre SS trim, it’s difficult to believe there could be a more handsomely configured example than chassis AM.115.1055 which is currently on offer at the Schaltkulisse showroom in Munich.

Ordered in Blu Scuro Metallizzato with Marrone leather upholstery, chassis ‘1055’ was originally supplied via Maserati’s Munich agent to a customer in Rosenheim.

More recently, since acquisition by its most recent custodian in 2021, the Maserati Classiche-certified chassis ‘1055’ has been the subject of an exacting restoration by Italian marque experts to its original factory specification. The mechanical work was undertaken by Officina Molinari di Molinari Paolo & C. S.n.c., bodywork by Carrozzeria Meschiari Dario, Roberto, Giorgio S.n.c., and the interior was re-trimmed by Luppi.

Bellissimo!
