One to Buy: 19,500 mile Pino Verde Met. 1978 Maserati Khamsin
Maserati unveiled its first true wedge-profiled production car, the Khamsin, at the Paris Motor Show in October 1973.
Impressively, chief Bertone stylist, Marcello Gandini, had incorporated all the characteristic wedge design language into a front-engined layout with the Khamsin. However, perhaps the excellence of the new car’s lines should have been expected – Gandini was after all the undoubted master of the wedge movement having already created seminal designs like the Lamborghini Countach, Lancia Stratos and Alfa Carabo.
Conceived as the ultimate 2+2 Grand Tourer of its time, the Khamsin was propelled by an all-alloy five-litre 320bhp dual overhead cam V8. Both a five-speed manual and three-speed automatic gearbox were offered.
The seventies was not a good time for Maserati and, despite a lengthy nine-year production run (1973 to 1982), just 420 Khamsins were built.
One of these, a late example from 1978, is currently on the market at the Ruote da Sogno showroom in Reggio Emilia.
We don’t know much about this machine other than it is finished in arguably the best colour scheme for one of these wedge jewels: Carabo-esque Verde Pino Met. over Pelle Fungo. It’s also left-hand drive with MPH gauges and English language interior script. The car’s showing a little over 19,500 miles on the odometer.
