One to Buy: ex-Gaetano Starrabba di Giardinelli 1955 Maserati A6 GCS Series 2 (SOLD)

Following on from the original A6 GCS which since 1947 had proven an enormously successful mount for the popular under two-litre Sports car class, Maserati produced an improved Series 2 variant between 1953 and ‘55.

In addition to a new straight six DOHC engine, the second generation A6 GCS featured an updated tubular steel chassis, improved suspension, wider track, bigger wheels, less weight and a larger fuel tank. Buyers could also choose from a new range of Spyder and Berlinetta bodies offered by Italy’s top coachbuilders.

As expected, the second series A6 GCS went on to become a key rival to Ferrari’s line of two-litre Sports cars and picked up a plethora of major honours during the years that followed.

Maserti ultimately completed a little over 50 examples of the Series 2 A6 GCS, one of which is currently on the market with Fiskens in London.

Chassis 2085 was ordered on January 1st 1955 by Italian nobleman, Gaetano Starrabba di Giardinelli of Palermo, Sicily, who had done most of his previous racing in a Lancia Aurelia. Starrabba went on to have a successful season with 2085, most notably picking up a win in the Trofeo Sardo, sixth at the Bari GP, seventh at the Caserta GP and tenth (fifth in class) at the Targa Florio.

Starrabba moved on to a Ferrari 500 TR for 1956 and chassis 2085 was sold to Erasmo Simeoni who undertook a handful of domestic hillclimbs.

More recently, this lovely little matching numbers A6 GCS has been restored to its 1955 trim and is being offered in race ready condition.
