One to Buy: 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT Autodelta Gr.2

Produced between 1974 and 1987, the Alfetta GT (which later evolved into the GTV) was Alfa Romeo’s two-door version of their Alfetta sedan which had been around in one shape of another since 1972.

Draped in a gorgeous Fastback body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro over at Ital Design, the GT and GTV went on to have a stellar motor sport career, most notably in the European Touring Car Championship where Alfa Romeo took the Manufacturers’ title four times on the bounce between 1982 and ‘85.

Prior to this, Alfa Romeo’s official competition arm, Autodelta, had created an array of different GT and GTV-based machines which had been used in both Group 2 and Group 4 competition.

The earliest of these were a batch of seven Group 2 rally cars built up for the 1975 season. That year’s most notable result was a win for Amilcare Ballestrieri and Enrico Gigli driving a works machine in the Rally dell’Isola d’Elba.

Currently on offer at the Ruote da Sogno showroom in Reggio Emilia is the Group 2 Alfetta GT supplied by Autodelta to Franceso Svizzero.

Together with his navigator, Gianfranco Masetto, Svizzero campaigned his uniquely painted Giallo Piper Alfetta in a variety of European and National events during 1975.

Highlights of the campaign were a trio of class wins at the Rally di San Giacomo (third overall), Rally 4 Regioni (fourth overall) and Rally Alpi Orientali (third overall).

Today, this fabulous Group 2 machine is offered in superb condition and would make a fantastic entry for all manner of historic events.

Reprinted below is Ruote da Sogno’s description for what is a very rarely seen 1970s Autodelta hot rod:

One of only 7 official AutoDelta examples.

The only yellow car of the seven produced.

This car was entrusted to the Swiss driver Francesco "Chicco" Svizzero.

Accompanied by the purchase invoice from AutoDelta.

Original Milan black plates.

Various photographs of the time with the car running, where it is possible to see its original "MI V6..." license plate.

The last year of Alfa Romeo officially present in the rally championship, which marks the end of an important cycle of history.

Many invoices and accompanying documentation:

  • Book written by Chicco Svizzero "Alfa Romeo and Autodelta in rallies" with photos of the car in the race

  • Technical passport

  • Various invoices and letters

  • Autosprint articles

Car in very good condition:

  • Body refreshed over twenty years ago

  • Engine increased to 2,000 cc in period

  • Interior largely preserved

  • Original plates

  • Complementary sheet

Often the excellent placements of this car were compromised by numerous mechanical failures, which did not allow Alfa Romeo to obtain the desired results. Despite this, the Alfetta had the basis for being able to achieve excellent results, but its career in rallies was prematurely interrupted due to strategies from the top, who did not want to continue their career in rallies.

Francesco Chicco Svizzero was one of the drivers who achieved some of the best results with this car, and he himself stated in various interviews that if this car had continued to race, it would have achieved the success it deserves.

To this day this example remains an extremely rare and sought-after item for any collector looking for a real piece of history.
