One to Buy: ex-works Autodelta 1966 Alfa Romeo 1600 Sprint GTA

Following the spectacular success of the TZ and TZ2 GT racing cars, Alfa Romeo commissioned their official competition department, Autodelta, to work its magic on something with more mainstream appeal for the 1966 season, something based on the kind of vehicle you could go and buy from an Alfa Romeo dealer.

With that in mind, Autodelta came up with the Giulia Sprint GT-based GTA.

500 copies of the substantially modified GTA had to be built in order to qualify for the Group 2 class of international touring car racing. This was of course a major undertaking, but it proved worthwhile with the GTA and subsequent GTAm going on to score a quintet of European Touring Car Championships between 1966 and 1971.

Customers could order their GTA in road or racing trim. Autodelta also went racing with the GTA, but these works cars campaigned on Alfa Romeo’s behalf were generally in another league compared to an off-the-shelf GTA Corsa.

One such car, located in Germany, is currently on the market with RMD.

First registered to Autodelta on February 7th 1967, chassis AR613091 was assembled to full works specification and thus riddled with all the best equipment. It was called into action for the Nurburgring 6 Hour ETCC race on July 2nd (DNF) and then sold to privateer Nicolo Ortugno who retained it until 1972.
