One to Buy: 1 of 5 ex-Anteo Allazetta 1950 Ferrari 166 Mille Miglia Series 1

Although named after Italy’s best known road race, Ferrari’s 166 Mille Miglia became most famous for a stunning outright win at the 1949 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in September 1948, the 166 Mille Miglia was a two-litre V12-powered sports racing car offered for general sale alongside Ferrari’s 166 Inter road line. However, this was no mere customer spec. off-the-shelf racer; Scuderia Ferrari also campaigned the car in the under two-litre class alongside its special reserve 195 Sport and 275 Sport models.

Buyers would order their 166 Mille Miglia and have to decide on which of the various Italian carrozzeria to use for coachwork. Most popular at the time was Touring of Milan who offered a range of Spyder, Berlinetta and Coupe designs for the various Ferrari models.

Thanks to Touring-bodied cars having taken some of Ferrari’s most significant early race wins, the firm’s lightweight bodies have become intrinsically linked to the rise of the Ferrari legend.

Currently on offer at the Tom Hartley Jnr. showroom in Leicestershire is one of just five 166 Mille Miglias built with Touring’s Berlinetta body – arguably the ultimate configuration for ultra high speed competition thanks to its slippery Fastback profile.

Chassis 0066 M was supplied new to Anteo Allazetta in Trieste during December 1950. Like most of these hand-built cars, it featured an array of unique features. Allazetta subsequently had the car uprated to 195 Sport trim and, during 1953/54, took part in a small number of mountain climbs – he even finished fourth overall and won his class at 1953 Trieste-Opicina contest.

As a consequence of its low competition time and a life with owners who have cherished it since new, chassis 0066 M is a rare example of a truly authentic early 1950s Ferrari sports racing car. It naturally comes with Ferrari Red Book Classiche certification confirming matching numbers chassis, body, engine and gearbox.
