VIN: the BBA Competition McLaren F1 GTR chassis 05R
History of chassis 05R
Chassis 05R was sold to French industrialist, Jean-Luc Maury-Laribiere, the boss of tile and brick manufacturer, Tuileries and Briqueteries Francaises (TBF).
TBF was the family business and in 1980, Jean-Luc’s father, Michel, was one of several French industrialists abducted during a spate of high-profile kidnappings. He was released after twelve days with no ransom paid, but a French nightclub owner was killed by the assailant while on the run.
Jean-Luc Maury-Laribiere was an enthusiastic privateer and ran 05R under the BBA Competition banner reflecting the Boulogne-Billancourt Angouleme region where he was based.
Maury-Laribiere was famously assured by McLaren that a GTR engine would last an entire season without a rebuild. McLaren were proved right and 05R’s engine wasn’t even dyno checked until it had completed over 10,000km.
In addition to ever-present backing from TBF, 05R began the 1995 season in a black and pink livery with sponsorship from Philippe Charriol Watches.
This was switched to a new colour scheme for Le Mans and the remainder of the year; Maury-Laribiere was a big fan of art cars and had already commissioned a stunning ‘Dragon Scale’ livery for his Venturi 600 SLM that he shared with Herve Poulain at Le Mans in 1994.
For the 1995 Le Mans race, Maury-Laribiere and Poulain approached Cesar Baldaccini to come up with a livery that mimicked the sculptures Poulain had created from his crushed racing trophies.
Baldaccini’s design was then painted onto the car by the artist, Filip Godet (‘Filip O’).
For 1996, 05R’s colour scheme was changed again, this time to a pink and black livery with backing from Italjet motorcycles.
05R’s final livery, two-tone ‘Dragon Scale’ and electric blue, was retained throughout 1997 and 1998.
During his four-season career with the GTR, Maury-Laribiere partnered with no less than 20 different co-drivers.
After its final competitive outing, 05R was sold to a second French owner who reinstated the Cesar livery.
The car then failed to sell at auction in 2008 and was purchased post-sale by a consortium led by Ray Bellm. The consortium in turn sold the car around seven years later.
05R has variously been UK road registered M463 CRV and CES 4R.
