History of chassis 0834
Chassis 0834 was the first of Ferrari’s mid V6-engined Dino-badged sports car line that would culminate with a run of 206 S Spyders and Berlinettas for the 1966 and 1967 seasons.
0834 made its debut at the 1965 Monza 1000km, but retired on the opening lap with a blown engine.
Lorenzo Bandini then drove it to win the 35 lap Rome Grand Prix for under two-litre cars at Vallelunga three weeks later.
0834 subsequently went up against the factory Porsche squad at the Nurburgring 1000km. Bandini and Vaccarella set a blistering pace and led their class for much of the race (running as high as third overall).
However, late on, the engine began to misfire as a result of a stray rubber seal blocking the carburettor jet. This allowed the works Porsche 904/8 of Jo Bonnier and Jochen Rindt to go past. 0834 nevertheless finished fourth overall and second in the under two-litre Prototype class.
The Dino’s final event in its original 1.6-litre configuration was at Le Mans. Unfortunately, it proved a major disappointment; 0834's engine dropped a valve with just two laps gone.
After Le Mans, 0834 returned to the factory where it was prepared for an attack on the European Hillclimb Championship. It was uprated with a two-litre engine for Ludovico Scarfiotti to use in the remainder of the 1965 campaign.
Scarfiotti joined the series at round three, Trento Bondone, which he won.
0834 then returned to Maranello where the next stage of its conversion was carried out.
A new lightweight Spyder body was fitted along with wider seven-inch rear wheels. At Scarfiotti's request, Ferrari also installed a larger diameter wood-rimmed steering wheel and a taller gear lever.
In its new Montagna trim, 0834 won the next three events: Cesana Sestriere, Freiburg-Schauinsland and Ollon-Villars. A fifth place finish at the wet Gaisberg finale meant Scarfiotti took the 1965 European Hillclimb Championship from Porsche’s Gerhard Mitter.
0834 subsequently returned to the factory and sat out the 1966 season.
For 1967, it was fitted with an engine, rear clip and Spyder roof from the standard 206 S.
In this configuration, it ran under a Scuderia Nettuno entry at the 1967 Targa Florio where works driver, Jonathan Williams, and Nettuno team owner, Vittorio Venturi, finished fourth overall and third in class.
Venturi then placed fourth in 0834 at the Monte Erice hillclimb.
In August 1967, chassis 0834 was sold to Leandro Terra who had it rebuilt to more or less full 206 S trim.
Terra continued to race the car until 1970 when he acquired another Dino, chassis 018.
Leandro Terra retained chassis 0834 until the late 1990s.
