History of chassis 30022
Chassis 30022 was one of two Zagato-bodied Aston Martin V8s commissioned by the Patrick Collection in Birmingham. The first to arrive, chassis 20028, was a Fury Yellow Vantage delivered in 1987. It was followed by chassis 30022 which was one of the 37 Zagato Volantes completed.
Signed off on May 24th 1989, chassis 30022 was uniquely finished in the handsome but unusual colour scheme of Malvern Brown with a matching roof, contrasting Magnolia leather upholstery and Beige carpet. It was also configured in right-hand drive (one of 24), seven of which were specified with automatic transmission.
Optional extras included Brown piping for the seats and floor mats, a Sony CD shuttle and special Recaro Ideal C Type seats. The seats were a special request from Alexander Patrick who found the standard Zagato items uncomfortable.
Alexander Patrick had opened the Patrick Collection in the mid 1980s.
Patrick’s father, Joseph, was the founder of the Patrick Motors Group which owned automotive dealerships, parts suppliers and petrol stations around the UK.
When Joseph Patrick died in 1982, it was decided to make a gradual withdrawal from the motor trade.
The Patrick Collection’s purpose-built museum was located in Kings Norton just outside Birmingham. It housed Joseph Patrick’s personal collection which he had built up since 1960, alongside an impressive display of modern supercars purchased after his death.
By the late 1980s, the Patrick Collection was home to nearly 250 cars. However, the museum never turned a profit and most of the cars were sold off during the 1990s.
One of the first to depart was chassis 30022 which is depicted here at Bramley Motor Cars in Guidlford during 1992. Over the next 25 years it went through the hands of several more dealers / owners during which time the car’s tiny mileage increased only slightly.
