History of chassis LML/50/6

Chassis LML/50/6 was the second of two DB2 prototypes manufactured in early 1950. This pair of cars followed the batch of four DB2 Le Mans Prototypes that were built and successfully raced in 1949.

Both chassis 5 and chassis 6 were completed in March 1950.

Chassis 5 was used for promotional duty in the UK while chassis 6 was shipped out to the USA on March 20th. It was destined for Aston Martin’s American distributor, Max Hoffman, and made the DB2’s international salon debut at the New York Motor Show which took place between April 15th and 23rd.

Painted Scarlet with a Beige interior, chassis 6 was built to right-hand drive configuration with a steering column-mounted gear change and no hood scoop. Advertised with a $5000 price tag, the car almost certainly spent time as a demonstrator at Hoffman’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed showroom on Park Avenue in New York.

From this location, Hoffman also served as the North American distributor for Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and Porsche.

LML/50/6 found a home with Long Island resident, Robert Yung.

Although the Aston never saw any competitive action, it may have sparked Robert Yung’s motor racing bug. Together with his brother, Peter, the Yungs went on to race a Frazer Nash Mille Miglia, Porsche 356 and two Ferraris (a 195 Sport and 225 Sport) between 1951 and 1953.

Thereafter, the history trail goes cold until the late 1960s when chassis 6 was reputedly purchased by a young man from St. Louis, Missouri. He is said to have sold the now white over black car in the mid seventies owing to a divorce.

The next owner apparently retained chassis 6 until 1991 but never used it.

At this point, the car was sold into the long-term ownership of a private US-based Aston Martin collector.
