HISTORY OF CHASSIS chassis 1121356

Chassis 1121356 was a left-hand drive Series 3 LP400 S built for a Saudi Arabian customer who ordered the unique colour combination of Sahara Gold over White leather. Gold wheels were also specified, but not a rear spoiler.

The Countach was dispatched to Achilli Motors in Milan on July 31st 1981 wearing temporary export plates EE 94170.

Chassis 1121356 quickly found its way to London, but was not initially registered in the UK. Instead, it remained on the Italian export plates, which routinely attracted the attention of the local constabulary. The car is pictured here on one such stop in Lancelot Place, south west London, where the nearly new machine attracted a large crowd.

1121356 was also frequently seen at the Intercontinental Hotel on Park Lane where the last four photographs were taken (also in August of 1981).

In October 1988, the Countach was UK registered 215 POD. By this time, the exterior colour had been changed to red.

Chassis 1121356 was exported to Belgium in the mid 1990s.

art-VIN-LamborghinicountachQVFLA12863a.jpg

HISTORY OF CHASSIS FLA12863

Chassis FLA12863 was dispatched from the Lamborghini factory on July 10th 1985. A right-hand drive Quattrovalvole, it was supplied new by Portman Garage on George Street to the Qatari Embassy in Mayfair.

Purchased by a member of Qatar’s ruling Al Thani family, FLA12863 was ordered in Rosso Siviglia with a Bianco interior, rear spoiler and sports exhaust.

The car was issued number plate C701 BYX on August 1st 1985. Portman consecutively registered another nine new Lamborghinis that day (a mixture of Jalpas and Countach Quattrovalvoles). August 1st was always a busy day for new car registrations as the licensing body made their annual switch to a new prefix (1985’s being ‘C’).

In addition to being frequently spotted around London, FLA12863 was loaned to What Car? magazine and road tested by Tiff Needell for their spring 1986 High Performance supplement.

FLA12863 was only retained by the Al Thani’s for a relatively short period before it was sold to the first of several UK owners. In 1991, the registration plate was switched to LBO 156. More recently, the car was exported to Australia.

VIN: Mahdi Al Tajir's Lamborghini Countach LP400 S chassis 1121352

LamCouS-0098-82LondonDorch1.jpg

HISTORY OF CHASSIS 1121352

Chassis 1121352 was one of 82 Countach built to Series 3 LP400 S trim. Compared to earlier iterations, these Series 3 variants had taller ride-height (raised by 30mm) and no central roof tunnel (removed to free up a little more cockpit space).

This car was configured with Rosso paint, a Bianco interior and the optional rear spoiler. It was dispatched to the Swiss Lamborghini distributor, Lambor SA, on July 17th 1981.

The car;s first owner was Mahdi Al Tajir, one of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s closest advisors. Sheikh Rashid ruled the Emirate of Dubai and when vast oil fields were discovered there in 1966, Al Tajir became director of petroleum affairs.

The second most powerful man in Dubai, Al Tajir brokered extraction deals with foreign companies and was given a percentage of Dubai’s oil revenues in return.

Al Tajir played a key role in the 1971 formation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was made the UAE’s first Ambassador to the UK as well as non-resident ambassador to a number of other European countries.

By the mid 1970s, Al Tajir was one of the world’s richest men and purchased a number of high end properties in the UK. His portfolio was bolstered by the acquisition of the Park Tower hotel in Knightsbridge and the site frequently played host to some of his personal exotics.

One such vehicle was this Lamborghini Countach photographed in 1982. Al Tajir was one of the first Countach owners to have his car customised with a Cannonball Run-style front spoiler.

Some of his other purchases (a Ferrari 512i BB and BMW M1) were even more individually modified.

Al Tajir kept a lower profile after his brother was kidnapped in South London and held by an Arab gang for eleven days during January 1986. Al Tajir arranged a $3m ransom paid by bank draft in Geneva and cleared in Beirut.

A Lebanese man with links to the CIA was arrested twelve days later in New York, but the money was never recovered.
