Undoubtedly the most successful racing car of the Group 5 era which ran from 1976 to 1981 / ‘82 was Porsche’s epic 935.

In 1976 the 935 was reserved for use by the Martini-backed factory team. 13 customer cars were then built up with single turbo engines for the 1977 season while the factory moved on to a new twin turbocharged unit.

For 1978, Porsche created the sensational Moby Dick which ran a drastically reduced campaign compared to years prior. Accordingly, Porsche left their customers to run riot and offered a further uprated 935 with an enlarged and now twin turbocharged motor.

Dubbed the 935 / 77A, 17 of these latest specification cars were assembled and sold to customers in the USA and Europe.

One of these 17 cars, chassis 9308900016, is currently on offer at the Duncan Hamilton ROFGO showroom in Micheldever near Winchester.

It was originally delivered to Reinhold Joest who contested the 1978 Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) and was a frequent top six finisher.

That year, Joest also ran chassis 9308900016 at the Le Mans 24 Hours where it appeared under a Whittington Brothers entry for Don and Bill Whittington who were joined in the car by Franz Konrad. Unfortunately, on that occasion the number 94 machine retired during the ninth hour.

During 1979 the bodyshell of 9308900016 was sold via Jurgen Kannacher to John Lagodny who campaigned it until 1981.

Today, chassis 9308900016 is offered in superb restored condition and would make an ideal addition to any Porsche or historic racing fleet.
