One to Buy: Super White 6100 mile 1998 Toyota A80 Supra Turbo

For the fourth generation Supra, Toyota focused on creating its highest performance model thus far.

Accordingly, this latest iteration of the popular Supra theme (code-named A80) came in for a significant weight reduction programme while considerable attention was paid to roadholding, handling dynamics and braking. Toyota also created a pair of new class-leading 2JZ straight six engines that came riddled with advanced features.

Having been launched at the Chicago Motor Show in February 1993, production officially began two months later with Toyota offering the Supra in two configurations: normally aspirated 220bhp trim or as a 321bhp Turbo (limited to 276bhp for the Japanese Domestic Market).

In addition to its pair of sequential turbochargers, the range-topping Turbo featured an array of additional enhancements that most notably included a six instead of five-speed gearbox and uprated brakes (with four-piston calipers up front and twin-piston calipers at the rear (instead of two and one respectively).

Unfortunately, owing to the immense tuning potential offered by the twin turbo 2JZ-GTE motor and a mass of other aftermarket parts for these cars, many were modified out of all recognition, especially when values were at their lowest.

As a result, finding a low mileage, totally original A80 Supra Turbo is nowadays extremely uncommon. However, surely one of the very best to exist will be going under the hammer at Mecum’s Kissimme sale on January 10th.

Manufactured during the final year for US Supra production in 1998, chassis JT2DE82A2W1002934 was configured with a Super White exterior, Black upholstery, the removable Targa roof panel, polished alloy wheels and, perhaps most importantly, the desirable six-speed manual transmission as opposed to the optional but very popular four-speed auto.

Purchased new in August 1998 from AutoNation, the Toyota main agent in Pinellas Park, Florida, chassis ‘1002934’ has remained in the ownership of a single family from new and remains in what Mecum describe as “unmodified highly original condition”.

The car retains its original window sticker and heads to auction with a little under 6100 miles on the odometer. Remarkably, the Targa roof panel is said to have never been removed.

Unrepeatable.
