One to Buy: 2200km base 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

At the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2012 Mercedes-Benz unveiled the third and final production version of the SLS AMG: the Black Series.

A further uprated version of the standard SLS and subsequent SLS GT, this latest Black Series followed a similar approach to Mercedes’ prior offerings that had appeared under the same name.

At the heart of the new car was a more powerful version of the 6.2-litre normally aspirated V8 hooked up to a gas strut-braced seven-speed DCT gearbox mounted lower in the chassis and with re-mapped software. Weight was cut by 70kg thanks to greater use of carbonfibre, a titanium instead of steel exhaust and a featherweight battery.

Among the many other improvements were a shorter rear axle ratio, re-rated settings for the dampers, anti-roll bars and steering, wider track plus carbon ceramic brakes fitted as standard along with the normally optional forged alloy wheels with new carriers.

Another key aspect of the SLS Black Series was its dramatic new look with flared fenders, custom aprons, a massive rear diffuser, deep side skirts and darkend light shrouds.

Most customers also opted for the AMG Aerodynamics Pack that comprised a GT3-style rear spoiler. However, we much prefer the extremely rare examples that were completed without, one of which is currently on offer at the L’Art de l’Automobile showroom in Paris.

Originally ordered by a customer from Monaco, this car was configured in Obsidian Black Metallic with the trademark Black Series interior in Black leather and alcantara. Optional extras included carbonfibre exterior, interior and engine packs while unusually the car was ordered without an audio system making it an almost certainly one-of-one specification among the 350 Black Series produced.

Today, this two owner car is presented in as-new condition having covered just 2200km.
