History of chassis 00002/52

Like the original W194 prototype (00001/52), chassis 00002/52 was used as a development mule for Mercedes’ 1952 campaign and did not go racing. These two cars were followed by eight subsequent examples built for the ‘52 season and then one final machine that went on to serve as an R&D hack for the W198 300 SL Gullwing road car.

Chassis 0002/52 was road registered W59 4029. Having fulfilled its testing role, the silver Gullwing Coupe was retained by Mercedes-Benz and used for promotional purposes.

In later years it was restored by the factory heritage department to original configuration.
