HISTORY OF CHASSIS 011

Chassis 011 was the second 333 SP leased from Ferrari North America by Giampiero Moretti, the founder of the Momo steering wheel company. This new car, acquired for the 1995 season, replaced chassis 004 which Moretti had campaigned alongside Eliseo Salazar during the 1994 IMSA championship. That season the pair had collected three wins and four second place finishes from seven outings.

For Moretti’s 1995 campaign he was co-driven by 1994 IMSA champion Wayne Taylor. Salazar made just the one appearance when he joined Moretti, Taylor and Didier Theys at the season opening Daytona 24 Hours. This debut event for chassis 011 saw it qualify fifth and lead the race but the car ultimately retired with engine compression issues.

Theys also drove alongside Moretti and Taylor at the Sebring 12 Hours where 011 was classified 34th overall and tenth in the WSC class after a much delayed run.

Thereafter, aside from one DNF (at Sears Point owing to problems with the oil system), chassis 011 finished all the remaining IMSA races of 1995, bagging six podium finishes and a brace of wins (at Lime Rock and Texas). Wayne Taylor (who single-handedly drove the car to its victories at Lime Rock and Texas) finished fourth in the Driver standings on 232 points while Moretti was tenth with 118.

For the 1996 season Moretti had planned to run two cars in the IMSA series but sponsor problems meant chassis 011 did not start the opening race of the year at Daytona. Instead, the Momo outfit raced its old car from 1994 in Florida (chassis 004, which had just been uprated to the latest specification and which Moretti had taken out a new lease for the season).

As for chassis 011, it was then sub-let to Gerry Jackson of Landshark Racing who contracted the Momo team to prepare, maintain and transport the car on his behalf.

Chassis 011 was primarily driven by Jackson, Fredy Lienhard and Didier Theys for the remainder of 1996 although Moretti did make a one-off appearance alongside Theys at Mosport after the Momo car (004) had been wrecked while on test during July.

In eight outings under the Landshark Racing banner, 011 posted just one DNF (owing to gearbox trouble at Dallas) but otherwise never finished outside of the top five. Its best result was second at the season ending Daytona 3 Hour event and the car’s other podium finish was at Mosport.

Jackson had apparently wanted to continue the existing arrangement with Moretti into 1997, however, the two men got embroiled in litigation and chassis 011 never raced in period again.

Jackson ultimately took ownership of chassis 011 in July 1997, after which he commissioned Michael Sheehan to find a buyer for the car. In August 1998 it was sold to Ferrari dealer, Onofrio ‘Frank’ Triarsi in New Jersey since which time it has passed through the hands of another couple of collectors.
