One to Buy: the Austin Powers 1967 Jaguar E-type 4.2 Series 2 OTS Roadster

On January 18th at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction in Florida, one of the most famous movie cars of the modern era will be going under the hammer: Austin Powers’ Jaguar E-type 4.2 OTS Roadster, better known as the “Shaguar”.

Mike Myers’ satirical take on British spy fiction of the 1960s and the Swinging London scene was so well received that the first Austin Powers movie, 1997’s International Man of Mystery, was followed up by The Spy Who Shagged Me in 1999 and Goldmember in 2002.

On a combined budget of $112m, the Austin Powers trilogy grossed over $676m at the box office. In addition to Myers who played Austin Powers along with his nemesis’ Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard and Goldmember, the films notably starred Elizabeth Hurley, Heather Graham, Beyonce Knowles, Michael Caine, Will Ferrell, Seth Green and Verne Troyer.

As for the Shaguar heading to auction, chassis 1E16504 was the only one of its type prepared for the three films and was variously driven by all Myers’ leading ladies. The car also appeared alongside Myers in Madonna’s music video for Beautiful Stranger which in 1999 won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.

Having started life as in Opalescent Silver Blue with a Blue convertible top and Dark Blue interior, chassis 1E16504 was transformed for the Austin Powers movies by way of a spectacular Union Flag colour scheme which it retains to this day. The car was prepared and maintained by Ray Claridge’s Cinema Vehicle Services from whom there is a letter of authentication on file also signed by Picture Car Coordinator, Josh Hancock.

The Shaguar is being offered fresh a recent mechanical update.
