One to Buy: ex-Ian Stewart / Ecurie Ecosse 1952 Jaguar C-type
/ Ben Tyer
Having been in with a shout of scoring an unlikely victory using an almost bog standard XK120 at the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hours, Jaguar went all-in with a purpose built machine for 1951: the XKC (better known as the C-type).
Jaguar rocked up with a three-car team and sensationally won the C-type’s maiden race: the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1951. The new car then went on to win its only other pair of outings that season which came at the Dundrod Tourist Trophy and Goodwood.
In light of such success, orders began to come in from customers who wanted to get their hands on a C-type for 1952.
Such an individual was Ian Stewart who had impressed Jaguar behind the wheel of his Ecurie Ecosse XK120 in 1951. Stewart was offered one of the first three customer C-types which he agreed to buy and (needing some cash) Ecurie Ecosse patron David Murray quickly agreed to fund.
Chassis XKC 006 was dispatched on July 4th 1952. Registered JWS 353, it became the first of the famous Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar C-types.
During the next two seasons, the car picked up a litany of domestic victories. It was then sold to Dutchman Hans Davids for the 1954 season, with whom it continued to win.
