Jens Lucking grew up in a small German town halfway between Berlin and Amsterdam. He started out with an inexpensive Agfamatic given to him as a tenth birthday gift by his uncle and, since then, has never left home without a camera.

Trips on his bicycle to the local, independent Porsche dealer were combined with family visits to big cities where Jens would ask his father to stop at various locations, hoping to track down a Lamborghini, Ferrari or some other exotic motor car.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Jens travelled far and wide to go car spotting; in addition to trekking around his native Germany he visited the likes of Paris, London and Monte Carlo. In 1991 he also spent several months working under the watchful eyes of Sant'Agata-trained Donato Passarotto, head mechanic at the SEA Lamborghini Service Station in Altwarmbüchen near Hannover, Lower Saxony.

As a result, Jens ended up with a fantastic array of period images, many of which we will be bringing you over the next few weeks.

In 1996, after completing his three-year photography training, Jens left Germany for London where he met renowned automotive photographer, Chris Bailey. Bailey soon became a mentor and, as his full-time assistant, Jens was taught more about the technical and business side of photography; the two have stayed close friends to this day.

Jens established his own studio in London during his mid-twenties and, in addition to his work with cars, has become internationally regarded for his portraits and advertising campaigns.

Since winning his first AOP Assistants’ Award in 1998, Jens’ images have consistently received international recognition, resulting in awards from the AOP, APA, Communication Arts and the National Photographic Portrait Prize.

His works have been exhibited in venues across Europe and the US, most notably the National Portrait Gallery in London, Carnegie Hall in New York and Google HQ Silicon Beach.

Within the past two decades, he has expanded his repertoire to include environments, animals and innovatively layered portraits, photographed in multiple elements and later combined into a single image.

Over the years, Jens has been commissioned by a huge array of major companies, ranging from Dreamworks and Lionsgate to Pfizer and Volvo, shooting cars, models and celebrities for ad campaigns and publications.

Today, Jens is based in Venice Beach, California. We are very grateful to him for allowing us to reproduce a gallery of his recent work.
