One to Buy: 7000 mile Silver over Can Can Red 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Speedster
/ Ben Tyer
Of all the series production G bodied 911s built between late 1973 and the summer of 1989, arguably the most sought after is the 3.2 Speedster.
Launched in its final form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1988, the first customer Speedsters began to roll out of Porsche’s factory in January 1989. Nine months later, the final example emerged as Porsche discontinued the G body 911 in favour of the heavily revised 964.
Despite the Speedster’s relatively brief lifespan and somewhat impractical specification (it was supplied with a flimsy canvas roof designed for emergency use only), Porsche ultimately sold a little over 2000 examples thanks to a surge in demand for low volume specials from high end manufacturers during the late 1980s.
In a typical reflection of the period, most 911 3.2 Speedsters were finished in the ubiquitous reds, whites and blacks that came to define the 1980s. However, one of the most handsome configurations for these last-of-type G body 911s is traditional Silver Metallic which arguably flatters the Speedster’s Tony Lapine-designed lines better than any other shade.
One such car, chassis WP0ZZZ91ZKS151373, is currently on offer with Tom Hartley Jnr. in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Configured with spectacular but rarely seen Can Can red upholstery, this right-hand drive UK market Turbo-bodied example has covered less than 7000 miles from new in the hands of just two owners, during which time it has been serviced exclusively by official Porsche main dealers.
Presented in a condition said to be indistinguishable from new, chassis ‘151373’ is almost certainly one of the best right-hand drive 911 3.2 Speedsters in existence.
