FAQ: Jaguar XJR-15

What is a Jaguar XJR-15?

The XJR-15 was conceived by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) as the ultimate road car of its day. TWR ran Jaguar’s sports car racing programme of the time and the XJR-15 was based around lightly modified elements of the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hours-winning XJR-9.

Road and racing versions were built as part of a limited production run, the latter for participation in a one-make series dubbed the JaguarSport Intercontinental Challenge.

When was the Jaguar XJR-15 launched?

The XJR-15 was announced in November 1990, given a press launch at Silverstone in January 1991 and then a public debut at the Autosport Racing Car Show a week later.

How many examples of the Jaguar XJR-15 were built and when?

53 cars were built, 18 to race specification and 35 to road specification.

Production took place between 1990 and 1992.

What method of construction did the Jaguar XJR-15 use?

The XJR-15 was based around a carbonfibre monocoque tub.

What engine did the Jaguar XJR-15 use?

The XJR-15 used an all-alloy normally aspirated six-litre 60° V12 with dual overhead camshafts, two valves per cylinder, dry-sump lubrication, Zytek electronic engine management and Lucas electronic ignition.

Peak output was 450bhp at 6250rpm and 420lb-ft at 4500rpm.

What gearbox did the Jaguar XJR-15 use?

Racing versions of the XJR-15 used a six-speed manual gearbox with straight-cut gears.

Road versions of the XJR-15 used a five-speed manual gearbox with full synchromesh.

How many different versions of the Jaguar XJR-15 were built?

Jaguar offered two versions, road or race, the latter of which came with the aforementioned full synchromesh five-speed gearbox plus slightly softer suspension settings, comfier seats, a different steering wheel and an intercom head set for driver and passenger.

What is the most sought after specification for a Jaguar XJR-15?

Because the XJR-15 contested a one-make series rather than a conventional open championship, values for road and racing versions are more or less the same. However, a race winning car with no history of damage in otherwise identical condition to a road version might be worth a little more.

Generally, value will be determined by a combination of condition, history, mileage and the car’s location.

What are the most sought after colours for a Jaguar XJR-15?

Jaguar only offered the XJR-15 to customers in one colour: XJR Blue.

What are the most sought after optional extras for a Jaguar XJR-15?

There were not officially any options other than road or race specification.

Is a Jaguar XJR-15 reliable?

If an XJR-15 has been regularly maintained by a respected specialist there is no reason why it should not be a reliable vehicle. Back in the day, its mechanical components were sourced either from highly rated F1-grade suppliers or manufactured in-house by TWR. The Jaguar engine fitted to the XJR-15 was not actually in a very high state of tune which should help with longevity.

Are parts expensive for a Jaguar XJR-15?

Yes. Off-the-shelf components sourced from outside suppliers will inevitably be expensive as they were to top flight competition standard. Custom equipment originally made specifically for the XJR-15 will be very expensive as it may have to be re-manufactured from scratch.

Does Jaguar still supply parts for the XJR-15?

No. Jaguar itself had very little to do with the manufacturing side of the XJR-15, it was instead handled by TWR.

What should you look for when buying a Jaguar XJR-15?

As corrosion is not an issue apart from the odd mechanical component if left standing in sub-optimal conditions, structural integrity caused by rust is not a problem.

Instead, crash damage, panel fit, documentation and general condition are the key considerations. Many of these cars have stood unused for years so expect a fairly substantial bill for recommissioning if that is the case.

What is the best way to buy a Jaguar XJR-15? Auction, dealer or private seller?

Given the XJR-15’s rarity and value, they are generally only sold by top dealers and auction houses with the latter most likely to represent best value from a buyer’s perspective.

Is a Jaguar XJR-15 a good investment?

A low mileage car purchased in as-found condition that can be stored without the need for expensive ongoing maintenance represents the best chance of seeing a return on investment.

Given the car’s high running costs, driving one of these cars for a couple of thousand miles a year and paying a respected firm to ensure it is on the button mechanically is unlikely to yield much profit (if any).
