One to Buy: 1 of 110 1985 Alpina B7 Turbo (SOLD)

Of all the Alpina variants built on BMW’s E24 6-series between 1977 and 1989, the most potent was the non-catalysed B7 Turbo.

Offered between 1984 and ‘87 (after which Alpina moved away from forced induction), the B7 Turbo was the fastest and most expensive product from Buchloe yet.

In the engine bay was an M30 B34-based single overhead camshaft 12 valve straight six to which Alpina fitted a single KKK turbo. The brakes and suspension were suitably uprated over the standard E24 and the B7 Turbo also came with familiar Alpina enhancements such as as Pirelli P7-shod 16-inch wheels, a handsome aero kit plus an array of special interior equipment. Transmission was through a Getrag close-ratio five-speed gearbox and limited-slip differential.

All told, the B7 Turbo produced a peak output of 330bhp at 5700rpm and a massive 378lb-ft at 2400rpm.

For comparison, the M1-derived dual overhead camshaft 24 valve M88/3 engine found in the contemporary M635 CSi pumped out 282bhp at 6500rpm and 251lb-ft at 4500rpm.

The Alpina was 10mph faster than the M635 CSi (168mph) and could hit 62mph from a standstill in just 5.4 seconds (down from 6.2).

Just 110 B7 Turbos were ultimately built (plus another 20 in slightly less potent catalysed trim) and they represent the ultimate road-going iteration of BMW’s E24 6-series.

This particularly fine unrestored Alpine White example is currently of offer with Springbok Sportwagen in Isernhagen, Germany.
