VIN: the works Porsche 917 chassis 006
History of chassis 006
On 21st April 1969, Porsche presented 25 brand new 917s for FIA inspection.
The regulations required a minimum of 25 cars for homologation but, unbeknown to the FIA delegation, the majority of 917s on display had only been loosely assembled.
Once homologation had been approved, most of them were dismantled to be built up properly at a later date.
Chassis 006 was one of nine 917s to see some kind of action in 1969 although it never actually raced.
The car’s only public outing came in June 1969 when it was taken to Le Mans to serve as a spare in case either of Porsche’s two works cars was ruled out for whatever reason.
Like its sister cars, 006 appeared at Le Mans in Langheck configuration. It was painted white with a dihedral red noseband.
After its appearance in France, 006 returned to the factory where it spent considerable time on the dynamometer.
It then underwent Porsche’s Long Distance Life Test that checked the fatigue rates of major components.
Upon completion of this work, chassis 006 was scrapped.
