History of chassis 9113600601

For the 1973 season, Porsche built 49 customer-spec. RSRs as racing versions of the 911 2.7 Carrera RS homologation special.

Chassis 9113600601 was sold to Bob Harmon of Prattville, Alabama who, for five decades, was among stock car racing’s most successful promoters.

Early in his career, Harmon purchased and operated the Montgomery International Speedway and later established All Pro Racing which he sold to NASCAR in 1990.

Harmon’s new 911 RSR was initially painted white with blue graphics but he soon changed to an elaborate red stripe kit instead.

Completed in February 1973, the car arrived in the US in time for a maiden outing at the Daytona 3 Hour race on April 21st (round two of the IMSA GT Championship). Milt Minter was hired to drive but posted a DNF.

Aside from the Watkins Glen 6 Hour World Sportscar Championship race on July 21st (where Harmon also took the wheel), Milt Minter did all the driving in 1973. His best result in 0601 was victory in the Lime Rock Trans-Am race on May 5th.

For 1974, Harmon fitted a Whaletail spoiler to replace the original Ducktail. The car was then brought up to 3.0 RSR trim for 1975 and repainted red with yellow graphics.

During 1974, 1975 and 1976, Bob Harmon, Jon Woodner and Robert Kirby all raced 0601.

The car’s best result from its ten outings over these three seasons came at the 1975 Sebring 12 Hours where it placed seventh overall.

After a big crash at Riverside in May 1975, the car underwent a major rebuild.

0601’s solitary outing in 1977 was at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Refinished in a white, purple and orange livery to reflect backing from Wynn’s engine additives, it was the last finisher, placing 20th overall and sixth in the IMSA class.

0601 then did one more race with Bob Harmon (at Sears Point in 1978) before it was sold to John Hotchkis in Colorado.

Hotchkis continued to race 0601 until 1984.
