History of chassis 4301195

Chassis 4301195 was the 36th M1 Procar built.

Unusually, it did not compete in the Procar series that took place in 1979 and 1980.

Instead, chassis 4301195 made its competition debut in the 1981 IMSA Championship having been sold to amateur Californian racing driver, Jo Crevier.

Crevier ran a BMW dealership in Santa Ana (Crevier Imports). Prior to taking delivery of his M1, he briefly campaigned an ageing Ferrari 365 GTB/4C (chassis 16343). Crevier then embarked on a full season’s IMSA racing in 1981 and enlisted rising star, Al Unser Jr., to co-drive.

4301195 was painted red with blue and white stripes to match the livery used on his Ferrari.

Crevier and Unser Jr. picked up four GTO class podiums in their first four events together. They had their last outing as team-mates at the Road America 500 mile race in August which was a combined World Championship / IMSA event. Unfortunately, on that occasion the car failed to finish.

Thereafter, Crevier was partnered by a series of different co-drivers but only picked up one more class podium (at the Pocono 500 mile race with Tom Winters).

Unser Jr. went on to make his CART debut in 1982 and also won that year’s Can-Am championship.

Meanwhile, Crevier embarked on his second IMSA season with 1195. However, he quit motor racing mid-season, despite having picked up a series of promising results.

The M1 was subsequently sold to Don Walker of Dallas.

Walker ran 4301195 in half a dozen IMSA events over the next three years but, by this time, the M1 was somewhat out of date.

In 1987, Don Walker sold 4301195 to Franco Sbarro in Switzerland.

Sbarro retained the M1 until the year 2000. Since then, the car has been through the hands of a number of European collectors and restored.
