History of chassis 4301017
Chassis 4301017 immediately followed BMW Motorsport’s two M1 Procar test mules.
It was the first production M1 Procar completed and the only example painted red.
Signed off on December 11th 1978, it was purchased by Austrian privateer, Sepp Manhalter.
Manhalter had a history with BMW. Backed by long term sponsor, Memphis cigarettes, he raced 2002s and CSLs throughout the 1970s. His cars were routinely prepared by Schnitzer Motorsport, to include the M1.
Manhalter contested the complete 1979 Procar series. His best result was seventh in the opening race at Zolder. The only other top ten finish came in the final round at Monza where he placed ninth.
Manhalter finished the season ranked joint 19th in the standings with six points.
He appeared at the Donington, Avus, Hockenheim and Zeltweg Procar races in 1980. Thereafter, 4301017 was used mostly for hillclimbs at Rechberg (in Austria) and the occasional race at Havirov (in Czechoslovakia).
When Manhalter’s association with Memphis came to an end in 1983, chassis 4301017 was repainted the BMW Motorsport colours of white with blue and red stripes.
Manhalter continued to compete with chassis 4301017 until 1990.
