VIN: the Franz Konrad / Jurgen Kannacher / GS Tuning BMW M1 Procar chassis 4301066
History of chassis 4301066
Chassis 4301066 was the M1 Procar supplied to German-domiciled Austrian privateer, Franz Konrad.
Having successfully campaigned a Porsche 914/6 GT during 1973 and ‘74, Konrad moved up to a 911 3.0 Carrera RSR for 1975. He stuck with the RSR for 1976 (the year Konrad Motorsport was established in Verl, North Rhine-Westphalia) and then raced 935s for the 1977 and ‘78 seasons.
Konrad’s M1 was painted a similar white and blue colour scheme to his 935 used throughout 1978. It appeared in most rounds of the inaugural Procar Championship along with select Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft events (DRM). The DRM organisers had given the M1 special dispensation to run even though it was yet to be homologated.
The debut appearance for chassis 4301066 came in round one of the ‘79 Procar Championship at Zolder. However, having qualified eleventh, Konrad failed to start after a fluid leak was discovered during the warm-up session.
The remainder of the Procar season saw Konrad collect a best finish of seventh in Monaco (round two). The car’s only other top ten result was tenth at Hockenheim (round five) where Louis Krages (aka “John Winter”) placed tenth. Konrad ultimately elected to skip the final two rounds of the Procar series at Zandvoort and Monza. His seventh place finish at Monaco was enough to secured 22nd in the final standings.
During its four DRM outings in 1979, chassis 4301066 collected three class podiums, two with Konrad (Mainz-Finthen and Diepholz) and one with Ralf-Dieter Schreiber (Zolder).
Between 1980 and 1982, Konrad did little in the way of GT racing as he switched his attention predominantly to single seaters. Accordingly, chassis 4301066 was sold to well-known team owner Jurgen Kannacher with whom Konrad had raced a Porsche 935 during 1977.
The 1980 season saw the now red and yellow-striped 4301066 raced by a variety of drivers in both that year’s Procar Championship and DRM.
Procar entries were thin on the ground with just three appearances (Avus, Norisring and Hockenheim). The car’s best placing was eleventh at Avus with Schrieber.
More success was had in the 1980 DRM where 4301066 contested most rounds and was frequently a podium finisher in class. From nine outings the car picked up one RT / Group 4 class third and a trio of seconds (variously thanks to Ralf-Dieter Schreiber and Jurgen Lassig). The highlights though were a pair of class wins at the Norisring (Schreiber) and Spa (Friedrich Glatz aka “James Bald”).
Chassis 4301066 continued to race throughout 1981 alongside Kannacher’s other M1 Procar, chassis 4301030.
In 1982 it was sold to Gerhard Schneider of the renowned GS Tuning outfit and successfully campaigned throughout that season. At the end of the year, 4301066 was sold to Hans Heyer who retained it until 2005.
