HISTORY OF CHASSIS 009

For the 1994 IMSA championship, Euromotorsport initially leased two 333 SPs from Ferrari North America. However, the team was reduced to running a single car at each event after some legal problems mid-way through the season.

For 1995, team principal Antonio Ferrari (grandnephew of Enzo Ferrari) leased a brand new 333 SP: chassis 009. Of the two 1994 Euromotorsport cars, he retained chassis 002 which contested one race (the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours). The other car (005) was returned to Ferrari North America.

009 made its debut at the opening IMSA championship round of the year: the Daytona 24 Hours.

Fabrizio Barbazza qualified the yellow ATEC-backed machine third fastest behind a brace of Scandia 333 SPs. He was joined for the race by Massimo Sigala, Gianfranco Brancatelli and Elton Julian. After 24 hours, 009 crossed the finish line eighth overall and second in the WSC class (behind the winning Kremer K8).

The Daytona outing was followed by an appearance at the Sebring 12 Hours six weeks later. Barbazza, Sigala and Julian qualified third behind the pole-starting Scandia Ferrari and a Spice BD-02. Delays hampered their progress and they were ultimately classified 22nd (34 laps behind the winning Scandia entry).

At the Road Atlanta 3 Hours on April 30th, Barbazza was set to race with Jay Cochran. Despite a crash in practice, they qualified third.

An altogether more serious incident occurred in the race.

Driving the opening stint, Barbazza was on his 13th lap when, trying to avoid two spinning Porsches, he did a pirouette which left him beached sideways down the pit straight. A fraction of a second later, the stationery Ferrari was hit at over 100mph by the Spice of Jeremy Dale. The impact smashed the Ferrari over 150 metres down the track and split it in two behind the rear bulkhead.

Barbazza sustained heavy head and chest injuries which left him in a critical comatose condition. Although he later recovered, Barbazza never returned to top flight racing.

A new tub numbered 009/A was used to rebuild the 333 SP in 1997. In 1998, this unraced machine was sold to Italian collector, Massimo Sordi.

HISTORY OF CHASSIS 005

After the original prototype (001), a further four 333 SPs were assembled for use in the 1994 IMSA series. One went to Momo Corse, one to Scandia and the remaining two were leased from Ferrari North America by Euromotorsport, a team run by Antonio Ferrari (grandnephew of Enzo).

Euromotorsport had been a regular entrant in the CART Indycar series since 1989. In 1994, the team expanded to undertake an IMSA campaign with their brace of 333 SPs.

The season got off to a great start when Jay Cochran took victory with 005 in the opening round at Road Atlanta. This was followed with a second place finish at the next event (Lime Rock) in late May.

However, earlier in the month, creditors petitioned the courts to put Euromotorsport into involuntary bankruptcy and, from round three, the team began to run just one of their cars at each event.

Chassis 005 appeared twice more in 1994, but failed to finish on either occasion.

At the end of the season, 005 returned to Ferrari North America.

It did not race in 1995, but in 1996, the tub was loaned to Momo Corse after one of their cars (004) was destroyed following a massive mid-season testing crash at Mosport.

005 was stripped down and the chassis dispatched to Momo Corse where it was re-assembled with the team’s own ancillaries.

In this configuration, 005 did three races in late 1996, most notably taking second overall at Mosport.

Thereafter, 005 returned to Ferrari North America and was re-assembled with its original components.

The car was then purchased by Michel Ferte who ran Pilot Racing.

Ferte had campaigned a Ferrari F40 in the BPR GT series between 1995 and 1996.

For 1997, he wanted a 333 SP to contest the Le Mans 24 Hours plus a number of events in the inaugural FIA International Sports Racing Series.

005 was re-liveried in the team’s famous blue colour scheme, but the 1997 season proved a disappointment. Ferte finished just one race (the non-championship Le Mans 4 Hours, where he collected fourth overall and second in the LMP class).

Another unsuccessful attempt was made on the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1998.

Ferte later tried to enter 005 at Le Mans in 1999 and again in 2000, but did not make the cut on either occasion.

The car subsequently returned to Ferrari North America and was sold to a private collector.

VIN: the Euromotorsport Ferrari 333 SP chassis 002

art-VIN-Ferrari333SP-002.jpg

HISTORY OF CHASSIS 002

Of the first five Ferrari 333 SPs constructed, chassis 002 was one of two leased by Antonio Ferrari for his Euromotorsport team (the other having been 005).

Antonio Ferrari was the grandnephew of company founder, Enzo Ferrari.

Between 1989 and 1994, Euromotorsport contested the CART Indycar series.

In 1994, the team expanded to mount an IMSA campaign for which the Italian outfit received backing from Ferrari North America.

That season, Euromotorsport made a promising start by winning the opening race of the season at Road Atlanta (Jay Cochran drove 002’s sister car to victory). However, in May, creditors petitioned the courts to put the team into involuntary bankruptcy and, from round three, Euromotorsport began to run just one of their cars at each event.

Having made just three appearances all year, chassis 002 was retained at the end of the 1994 season.

In 1995 (now painted yellow), it became the first 333 SP to race at Le Mans (its only outing of the year).

The sister car (005) was returned to Ferrari North America at the end of 1994. It was replaced with a new example (009). When 009 was destroyed in its third race, Euromotorsport’s involvement in the IMSA series came to an end.

002 was subsequently sold to Ferrari dealer, Onofrio ‘Frank’ Triarsi, who in turn sold it to a private American collector.
