At the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2012 Mercedes-Benz unveiled the third and final production version of the SLS AMG: the Black Series.

A further uprated version of the standard SLS and subsequent SLS GT, this latest Black Series followed a similar approach to Mercedes’ prior offerings that had appeared under the same name.

At the heart of the new car was a more powerful version of the 6.2-litre normally aspirated V8 hooked up to a gas strut-braced seven-speed DCT gearbox mounted lower in the chassis and with re-mapped software. Weight was cut by 70kg thanks to greater use of carbonfibre, a titanium instead of steel exhaust and a featherweight battery.

Among the many other improvements were a shorter rear axle ratio, re-rated settings for the dampers, anti-roll bars and steering, wider track, bigger carbon ceramic brakes and forged alloy wheels with new carriers.

Another key aspect of the SLS Black Series was its dramatic new look with flared fenders, custom aprons, a massive rear diffuser, deep side skirts and new lights. Most customers also opted for the AMG Aerodynamics pack that comprised a GT3-style rear spoiler. However, we much prefer the extremely rare examples that were completed without the massive rear wing, one of which is currently on offer at the L’Art de l’Automobile showroom in Paris.

Originally ordered by a customer from Monaco, this car was configured in Obsidian Black Metallic with the trademark Black Series interior in Black leather and alcantara. Optional extras included carbonfibre exterior, interior and engine packs while unusually the car was ordered without an audio system making it an almost certainly one-of-one specification among the 350 Black Series produced.

Today, this two owner car is presented in as-new condition having covered just 2200km.

Unveiled at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is inspired by the SLS GT3, from which it partly borrows the design. The fenders have been widened by 13 mm at the front and 26 mm at the rear. The front and rear shields have been completely redesigned.

As on the SLS GT3, the carbon fiber hood features a functional central air outlet. The enlarged side vents also ensure optimal air entry into the cooling modules at the front. Finally, the headlights have been combined and reworked to give the SLS Black Series a muscular and aggressive look.

Mechanically, there are a lot of improvements on the Black Series: many internal body elements are made entirely of carbon fiber, the 7-speed AMG Speedshift transmission is installed ten millimeters lower in order to lower the vehicle's center of gravity, a new electronic locking of the AMG rear differential replaces the mechanical variant.

With a curb weight of 1,550 kg, this fifth Black Series model gains 70 kg compared to the SLS AMG, and achieves a power/weight ratio of 2.45 kg/hp, notably thanks to the new AMG sports exhaust system in titanium, 13 kg lighter .

Powered by the legendary AMG 6.2 liter V8, power has been increased to 631 hp at 7,400 rpm while torque has been reduced to 635 Nm at 5,500 rpm, while having pushed the red zone to 8,000 rpm. This propels the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, for a top speed of almost 196 mph.

This ultimate edition of the SLS AMG was limited to only 350 examples and today it is a model increasingly sought after by seasoned collectors.

The car we are offering for sale was delivered to a Monegasque resident, who specced it in Obsidian Black with black leather and Alcantara interior. All the carbon options were ticked, right down to the sublime engine compartment.

This configuration differs from the vast majority of SLS AMG Black Series because the car is not equipped with the AMG aerodynamic Package including the imposing spoiler and side flaps, nor the radio, so the pilot can concentrate fully on the pleasure of driving.

Now a second hand registered in France, this SLS AMG Black Series has covered only 2,200 km since it was put into circulation. It is in as-new condition and comes with its original documents and protective cover.
