History of chassis 4301041

Chassis 4301041 was the M1 Procar campaigned throughout 1979 by Helmu Marko on behalf of Gerhard Schneider. It was driven throughout the ‘79 campaign by Markus Hottinger, a highly rated young Austrian who had a central contract with BMW Motorsport and raced for a number of the firm’s satellite operations throughout 1978 and 1979.

For the inaugural Procar championship, 4301041 appeared in a white, green and red livery with backing from Jim Beam, Castrol and Winnebago (for whom Schneider was the German distributor).

Aside from the race at Donington, Hottinger contested every round of the 1979 Procar series. His best result was second at Zeltweg. Hottinger scored two more podiums with third place finishes at Silverstone and Monza.

At the end of the year, Hottinger had accumulated 45 points which was enough for him to claim fourth in the final standings behind Clay Regazzoni (45), Hans-Joachim Stuck (73) and Niki Lauda (78). Hottinger then took in a DRM race at the Nurburgring in which chassis 1041 crossed the line seventh overall and second in class.

For 1980, the M1 was campaigned by Gerhard Schneider’s own team (GS Tuning). Meanwhile, Helmut Marko acquired another M1 Procar (chassis 4301036) which he anticipated Hottinger would drive in the forthcoming campaign. However, Hottinger was unfortunately killed during a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim two weeks before the Procar season got underway.

In addition to 4301041, Gerhard Schneider purchased two new Procars for the 1980 season (4301098 and 4301099). Now in the team’s handsome blue and white Denim livery, 4301041 served as the outfit’s third entry.

That year, it made five Procar championship appearances in the hands of four different drivers.

Johnny Cecotto and Michael Bleekemolen took an eighth place finish apiece (at Imola and Zandvoort respectively). Bernard Brutschin and Friedrich Glatz failed to finish in their combined three outings with the car.

At the end of the season, Glatz (who raced under a number of psuedonyms to include James Bald) ran 4301041 in a DRM race at the Nurburgring where he finished ninth overall and second in class.

For 1981, Gerhard Schneider sold 1041 to German privateer, Rolf Goring.

Having taken over his family’s painting and decorating business in the early 1960s, Goring expanded operations and was subsequently able to indulge his passion for motor racing. Starting in 1967, he campaigned a variety of Porsches and found a particular affinity for hillclimbing.

Between 1981 and 1986, Goring raced and hillclimbed chassis 4301041 extensively. He competed in everything from the World Sportscar Championship to the European Mountain series.

Driving his Bauerle Farben-liveried BMW, Goring secured the European Hillclimb Chmapionship for Production Cars in 1983 and 1984. He won the Group 4 category four years straight between 1981 and 1984.

In 1985, Goring also began to run a Group A BMW 635 CSI which meant chassis 4301041 progressively saw less and less action.

Goring sold the M1 to Nicolas Buhrer in Switzerland after the 1986 season.
