One to Buy: 1 owner 5000 mile 1999 Lotus Elise S1 111S
/ Ben Tyer
Having already released a couple of super hardcore Sport-badged variants since the Elise had gone into production during mid 1996, Lotus unveiled a souped-up mainstream iteration dubbed the Elise S (or 111S) at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999.
At the heart of this latest Elise was a more powerful version of the all-alloy DOHC 1.8-litre Rover K-series inline four that most notably now featured a sophisticated Variable Valve Control system. In addition, larger inlet and exhaust valves were fitted along with a new inlet manifold with trick plenum chamber, sequential fuel-injection, re-mapped engine management and distributor-less ignition with individual coils for each cylinder.
Peak output was 143bhp at 7000rpm and 128lb-ft at 4500rpm compared to 118bhp at 5500rpm and 122lb-ft at 3000rpm fort the base Elise.
Elsewhere, the 111S got uprated brakes (now cross-drilled as well as ventilated with uprated front calipers), new OZ Racing wheels (with half-inch wider rears), a high-rise rear spoiler, a larger power bulge on the engine cover, a new egg-crate grille and clear indicator lenses. The normally optional headlight covers and spot lights were fitted as standard. Inside, re-shaped sports seats came with horizontally ribbed centres plus thicker foam cushions and carbonfibre inserts were added between the upper and lower dash.
A little under 1500 examples of the 111S were produced between 1999 and 2000 and set to go under the hammer at Iconic Auctioneer’s Silverstone Classic sale on August 23rd is surely one of the most interesting we’ve seen: chassis ‘36064’.
Supplied to its one and only owner on March 18th 1999 by Kings Lotus of Warwick, since that time the the car has accumulated only 5115 miles. It comes complete with the original book pack and will be sold with a fresh cambelt service.
