One to Buy: Medici Blue 1965 Lotus Type 26 Elan S2
/Once a couple of early production issues had been sorted, the critically acclaimed Type 26 Elan swelled the coffers at Lotus.
Two years after launch, and with around 800 units completed, an S2 version was introduced that featured a number of cosmetic and mechanical improvements.
Importantly, the S2’s update programme did not dilute the essential Elan DNA that had so captivated all who drove one. With a power-to-weight ratio approaching 200bhp per ton, perfect weight distribution and just 585kg to lug around, a well-sorted Elan was driving heaven.
The Elan’s innovatively designed fibreglass bodyshell (styled by Ron Hickman) looks great in practically any colour, but we don’t think there’s a better shade to showcase its delicate beauty like Medici Blue as depicted here.
This 1965 car, chassis 26/4385, will be going under the hammer at Iconic Auctioneers’ Stoneleigh Park sale in Coventry on September 28th.
Comprehensively rebuilt by a previous owner on a replacement Lotus chassis, during the last seven years the current custodian has commissioned an engine rebuild with new water and oil pumps, a rear suspension rebuild, new shocks, retroflex couplings, brake discs and clutch plus gearbox, heater matrix and voltage regulator overhauls.
The colour was changed to Medici Blue some years ago and displays some minor paint imperfections of the type commonly found on these Elans – but that just leaves you to get in and drive!
