Lancia, Gilles & the 1979 Giro d'Italia

Held between 1973 and 1980, the Giro d’Italia was a marvellous end-of-season party for the huge partisan crowd it attracted. Combining circuit racing and tarmac rally stages interspersed with regularity sections on public roads, it was essentially an Italian version of the Tour de France and filled a gap left for a national event since the Mille Miglia’s demise in 1957.
